E10: Preparing for a Successful Photoshoot

Whether you’re an entrepreneur doing a brand photoshoot, or you just want to take some personal blog photos or headshots, a successful photoshoot takes a lot of prep beforehand. In this episode, I go through my tips and tricks as a personal stylist on how to make your photoshoot go as smoothly as possible.

When I recently stayed in my family home, I came across some old albums filled with photoshoots I had done with friends during my teen years. And even though I was cringing slightly at my sixteen-year-old self, looking at the photos made me remember that period of my life in clearer detail because I had a more tangible connection with my past self through the albums.

That’s why I love helping people make similar memories through photoshoots, and my love for them grew as I started experiencing them through a more professional capacity during my fashion and celebrity PR internships (which you can hear more about in Episode 1 of this podcast)!

When I booked my first personal photoshoot as an adult, I was an aspiring influencer after leaving my branding job a few months before. I was in a very vulnerable place of transition, and I was so nervous. Although I had previous experience with photoshoots, there was something about this particular one - representing myself and my personal brand - that felt intensely scary. I actually had a panic attack the night before, and I didn’t know whether I could go through it. Luckily, I had a very understanding photographer who was happy to push the shoot to a little later so that I could gather myself, and we were able to have an amazing photoshoot.

It is so vulnerable to be the face of your business and be the representative of your work, it can lead to a lot of self-doubt. I remember before my first photoshoot thinking, “who do I think I am putting myself out there like this?” That’s why it’s important to overcome this your own way. Energy really does read in pictures, so it’s so important to have confidence in yourself. That confidence should also come with a feeling of preparedness and readiness.

I find a lot of creative fulfillment in helping my clients with their own photoshoots. There are so many things that can happen during a photoshoot day that can leave us feeling stressed out. From carrying all of your clothes, moving between different locations, meeting up with hairstylists, makeup artists, photographers… there’s a lot of fast-moving parts on a shoot day.

That’s why I’m sharing the tips I’ve learned from all of the photoshoots I’ve assisted, including my Photoshoot Ready VIP clients, on how to make sure your photoshoot goes as smoothly as possible so that you get the best photos out of them.
