“Lizzie McGuire, you are an outfit repeater!”
If you’ve seen the Lizzie McGuire movie, you might remember Kate Sanders called Lizzie OUT at graduation. Until I first saw this scene, I didn’t think much of outfit repeating as a 7-year-old who wore a school uniform.
From then on, I’d notice in movies I loved that the big moment for the protagonist almost required a dramatic outfit change. It instilled this false idea in me that new was always better. It led me to a packed closet with clothes I didn’t even wear in my normal day-to-day life.
As a recovered shopping addict, I deeply understand why we feel pulled to keep buying new things.
We want to mark a special occasion with something new or capture a different vibe.
We get shiny object syndrome with new trends & feel the need to “keep up”.
We grow understandably bored by our clothes when we’re repeating the same outfits.
The simple solution? Be an outfit remixer instead of an outfit repeater.
The truth is, you don’t need much to make an outfit look different. Let’s not underestimate the power of a few key pieces.
Layer with outerwear or get creative with layering (e.g. long sleeve under a dress)
Switch out the top or bottom of an outfit
Change up your shoes
Accessorize with jewelry
Add a hat or hair accessories
Style your hair and/or do your makeup differently
If anyone calls you out for “repeating” a few pieces, then just compliment their attention to detail and go on your unapologetic, merry way! You’re thriving as an outfit remixer by saving the money, time and energy of constantly buying new outfits.
